CC Riders' Most Remote Outpost

One of our CC Riders, Rob Canfield, is currently serving in Afghanistan with the U.S. Navy. He’s deployed with a Special Warfare Unit that operates robotic devices to check out and disarm/explode IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices). A number of us have talked about getting together a "care package" of items from the CC Riders to send to Rob. Here's the plan:
If you are interested in participating here is a list of items that I've been told Rob would appreciate. This list is by no means complete, so feel free to add to it as you wish.......just remember it should be something "appropriate" for the climate, dry, dusty, hot in the summer, and cold in the winter.

  • Healthy Snacks (dried fruit, nuts, etc) & his avorites: CheezWiz & black jelly beans
  • DVDs, CDs (used or new)
  • AA batteries
  • Bandanas
  • Neckerchiefs (especially the ones you wet to eep cool)
  • Sunscreen
  • Books (new or used)
  • Cookies, crackers, etc.
  • Salami or preserved meats
  • Baby wipes
  • Push Pins
  • Phone Cards (for calling home)
  • Money (to pay for Mailing Costs...any left over will be used to buy add'l items)

We also encourage you to include a hand-written note card with any items you donate, as it will mean a lot to Rob and others he will share these items with.

If you are considering giving a "PHONE CARD", one of our riders who has done some research of various companies and rates, suggests you check out the AT &T website, and the special section called "Camp AT & T" that focuses specifically on various options for meeting the home-calling needs of our folks overseas......you can check this out at: www.usa.att.com/military.

If you would like to donate items for the package, just bring them on the train with you and give to the Lord Mayor Robert Conheim, Chuck Robuck or Toni Tidman (usually in the Cafe Car). Please bring your items not later than October 7th (final collection will be on Train 538 that evening). We plan to package up the items and ship to Rob the week of October 10th.
Thanks!
